Ministry and death
of the two prophets
The two prophets that are like
Elijah and Moses begin prophesying when Jerusalem falls, and continue for
1260 days or about 42 months (or about three and a half years):
... the holy city for 42 months.
And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260
days, clothed in sackcloth.
(Revelation 11:2-3) |
These two prophets will reveal all the hidden truths
for all to see:
And I will give power to my
two witnesses .... These are the two ... lampstands that stand before the
Lord of the earth.
(Revelation 11:3-4)
No one lights a lamp and hides
it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand,
so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing
hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not
be known or brought out into the open.
(Luke 8:16-17) |
Notice that the two prophets, symbolized by lamps,
reveal all the hidden truths.
These two prophets will do miracles
to kill their enemies and strike the earth with every kind of calamity
as often as they want, in the same way that Moses struck Egypt with plagues
leading up to the Exodus (Exodus 7-12).
If anyone tries to harm them,
fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how
anyone who wants to harm them must die. These men have power to shut
up the sky so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;
and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth
with every kind of plague as often as they want.
(Revelation 11:5-6) |
After the two prophets have
finished their testimony they will be overpowered and killed by the Antichrist.
Their bodies will lie in the streets of Jerusalem and be refused burial.
The inhabitants of the earth will celebrate the two prophets' deaths.
Now when they have finished
their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them,
and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the street
of the great city, which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where
also their Lord was crucified. For three and a half days men from
every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and
refuse them burial. The inhabitants of the earth will gloat over
them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts, because these two
prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.
(Revelation 11:7-10) |
