The Antichrist:
The evil leader of the "beast"
A leader will seize power of
the final earthly government (revived Ottoman Empire) through intrigue
and deceitfulness (Daniel 8:23-25; Daniel 11:21-23; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12;
Revelation 13:11-14). In a previous chapter I showed that he will
come from the country of Turkey, and that he will rule over a fragile coalition
of North African, Middle Eastern, and south-eastern European countries.
(I strongly encourage you to read that chapter, if you haven't already!)
.... He had two horns like a
lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.
(Revelation 13:11) |
Notice above that this ruler
symbolically looks like a lamb. In the Bible, a lamb is a symbol
that represents Christ (John 1:29), so this ruler will appear to be the
Messiah. Notice this:
He opposes and exalts himself
over everything that is called God or is worshiped, and even sets himself
up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
(2 Thessalonians 2:4)
...He will exalt and magnify
himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God
of gods .... He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers ... nor
will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all.
(Daniel 11:36-37)
At that time if anyone says to
you, "Look, here is the Christ!" or, "There he is!" do not believe it.
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs
and miracles to deceive even the elect -- if that were possible.
(Matthew 24:23-24) |
These passages are even more interesting when you
consider the white horseman in Revelation 6:2. The four horsemen
in Revelation 6 match the prophecy given by Jesus of four events in Matthew
24:4-7. That white horseman is symbolic of false religion (Matthew
24:4-5), and the horseman resembles Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:11).
Clearly this ruler will be a false religious leader who deceives people
into believing that he is the "messiah" or "christ".
Also, Revelation 13:11 says
that this ruler speaks like a dragon. Revelation 20:2 tells us that
a dragon is symbolic of Satan, the devil. Notice what the Scriptures
say about this man:
The coming of the lawless one
will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of
counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that
deceives...
(2 Thessalonians 2:9-10)
...a stern-faced king, a master
of intrigue, will arise. He will become very strong, but not by his
own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed
in whatever he does. He will destroy the mighty men and the holy
people. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself
superior....
(Daniel 8:23-25) |
Clearly this counterfeit "christ" that is of the devil
is the Antichrist.
Some Christians falsely believe
that the Antichrist will be Christian because they cannot see beyond there
own religion. But Scripture tells us that the Antichrist does not
acknowledge that Christ has come in the flesh (1 John 2:22; 1 John 4:1-3;
2 John 7:7), and all Christians believe that the Messiah has come.
Therefore the Antichrist cannot be Christian.
It is important to note that
Muslims believe that Jesus existed yet deny his deity. I will discuss
this in the next section.
